PC Gaming is DEAD!: December 21st, 2010

Congratulations to the December 18th trivia contest winner, Taylynne, who won a copy of Audiosurf!

Yesterday's trivia question:
What was the first RTS that was completely 3D where units could move on all 3 axes?

The mothership was a massive, slow-moving ship
that had to be protected.
Answer: Homeworld by Relic Entertainment.

Because it took place in space it was able to do something no other RTS has done before: let the player move units on an X, Y, and Z axis. This is still a rare thing to find in an RTS game.

Here's a Homeworld gameplay video.

Sale News!:

Minecraft is now in beta, with some fun new glitches!

DC Universe Online has been announced for a January 11th release for North American, January 14th for the UK.

Hacked Kinect has potential for sign-language recognition.

Joystiq announces that there are no noteworthy PC releases this week. The Oddboxx isn't noteworthy? Or a new Back to the Future game by Telltale?

As reported by NPR, there is another study of the effects of video games on cognitive abilities. Conclusion: "It turns out that action video games are far from mindless." Participants in the study found that playing action games had a significant effect on many mental abilities that are significant to "real life" applications.

Also of note in this study: both women and men who played games had similar spatial cognitive skills, something that sets them apart from the average population, where a gender-gap exists.
