Where I've Been

I'm back!  Watch this space for updates and site redesign during November.

I've been on hiatus working on a game called Pixel: ru².

I'm going to write more about that later, as working on the game and promotion is keeping me busy lately.  I just wanted to mention it and ask people to take a look and watch for new content in the coming weeks.

Thank you to everyone who has continued to visit the page and watch for updates.  I hope you won't be disappointed.

PC Gaming is Dead!: January 4th, 2011

Congratulations to Masni for winning the trivia contest and receiving a copy of Evil Genius!

Previous trivia:
Which RTS game pioneered the use of three distinct & unique races instead of two equal sides, and was able to successfully balance them?

The "Zerg Rush" is such a well-known strategy
from StarCraft that it's become a commonly
used term outside of the game.
Answer: StarCraft by Blizzard Entertainment.

Although some earlier RTS games had 3 or more different sides one could play, they weren't that different from each other. For example, Age of Empires was released before StarCraft and had 9 civilizations, but they were similar. The 3 races in StarCraft were completely different from each other, and would be played differently.

Although the single player campaigns of StarCraft are fondly remembered by the fans, the multiplayer is what most people know StarCraft for. Thanks to the balanced races, complex strategies, and quick matches, StarCraft has become a hugely competitively game. StarCraft is still played competitively today and is often a game found in tournaments that focus on more than one game and genre.

A digital copy of the StarCraft Anthology, which contains StarCraft and the Brood War expansion pack, is available for $14.99 from Blizzard's online store.

News:

Here is some old news from Reddit that we missed a few days ago (sorry Reddit).
A patch has been released for Assassin's Creed 2 and Splinter Cell: Conviction that makes the games no longer validate with Ubisoft's DRM server while you play them. You will still need an online connection for the initial launch of the games, but after that Ubisoft won't be constantly checking to make sure your game is valid.

A new Mass Effect 2 DLC may be coming out a few weeks before the third game.

A BioShock novel will be released in March.

EA has unlocked Operation Hastings for Battlefield: Bad Company 2: Vietnam for Xbox 360 and PS3 even though neither of them have completed the 69 million team actions.

PC Gaming is DEAD!: December 31st, 2010

Congratulations again to JDCapo for solving the puzzle that was going on throughout December and winning a copy of Fallout: New Vegas.

Previous trivia question:
What highly influential first person shooter did Warren Spector design?

Pick the lock, manipulate electronics, hack the keypad,
enter the correct key code, or just shoot the guard?
Answer: Deus Ex by Ion Storm Inc.

Ion Storm was co-founded in 1996 by many important people in the gaming industry: John Romero, Tom Hall, Jerry O'Flaherty, and Todd Porter. In 1997 Warren Spector joined the company and founded the Austin branch of Ion Storm. Warren Spector worked on many influential games: Wing Commander, Ultima Underworld, System Shock and Thief. He brought along many other talented people from Looking Glass Studios that also worked on these games, and together they made Deus Ex.

Deus Ex built on what System Shock started. It was an FPS/RPG hybrid with a rich story built around real world conspiracy theories. The environments were open and encouraged the player to explore. Warren Spector tried to focus on making the game an immersive experience so players would not be pulled out of the story and reminded that they were playing a game.

Deus Ex received near-universal acclaim from the industry and from critics. It earned a number of awards and many nominations, including over 40 "Game of the Year" and/or "Best in Class" awards. In 2009 PC Gamer named Deus Ex the "Best PC Game of All Time."

Previous trivia question:

What game is Fallout the spiritual successor to?

Introduction to Wasteland
Answer:

Wasteland by Interplay Productions.

Interplay created Wasteland in 1988, and it was published by Electronic Arts. Later on when Interplay became its own publisher it wanted to do another game like Wasteland. They couldn't make a sequel to Wasteland because EA owned the rights to it. Instead, they made a spiritual successor: Fallout. Fallout was so influenced by Wasteland that it can really be thought of as an unofficial sequel.

Wasteland was a unique RPG for the time. Not only was it set in a post apocalyptic world instead of a fantasy one, it also gave the members of your party their own AI so you weren't in control of everyone. Your companions could even refuse orders you gave them. It was also one of the first games to feature a persistent world.

To help save space the story was provided in a booklet that came along with the game. The game would instruct you to read specific paragraphs within the booklet. To punish people who read ahead to try to spoil the game, there were fake stories included in the booklet, such as a story about a mission to Mars.

Live Fallout Trivia Question!:

News:

Good job PC, you unlocked the fifth multiplayer map for Battlefield: Bad Company 2: Vietnam. Currently, the Xbox 360 is just over half way done and the PlayStation 3 is even further back.

If anyone is interested in the new Tomb Raider game or just the new Lara Croft, Game Informer posted a gallery of screenshots and concept art.

Boring statistics portion of the podcast, courtesy of ABI Research:

"The overall online game market is expected to eclipse $14.5 billion in 2010 and grow to just over $29 billion by 2015, a 14.8% CAGR. Of this revenue, casual gaming is expected to account for nearly $7 billion of the 2010 revenue and over the course of the five year forecast window it is forecast to grow at a 16.8% CAGR to eclipse $15 billion. The MMO market is expected to be larger in 2010 at $7.6 billion, but will show a lower CAGR of 12.8%, reaching almost $14 billion by 2015. The casual market is expected to grow faster due to the wider audience appeal, but the Asia-Pacific region in particular will help drive the MMO market."

The final clue for the Fallout: New Vegas puzzle was given, and it appears that JDCapo solved it. Congratulations! You really earned it.

Previous trivia question:
What game is BioShock the spiritual successor to?

System Shock 2 provided you with a large
variety of items.
Answer: The System Shock games by Looking Glass Studios & Irrational Games.

System Shock was released in 1994. It was one of the first FPS games to feature a true 3D environment. The player is a hacker that is on board a space station taken over by a hostile AI named SHODAN.

Although the game is considered innovative for the genre, System Shock was only a moderate success.

System Shock 2 came out in 1999 and was created by Looking Glass Studios and Irrational Games (an offshoot of Looking Glass that was founded by 3 ex-employees).

The System Shock games served as inspiration for many other great games, such as Deus Ex, BioShock. The character of GLaDOS in Portal was inspired, in part, by SHODAN.

Since December 22nd, Battlefield: Bad Company 2: Vietnam has been having a competition between the different gaming platforms to unlock a 5th multiplayer map. Each platform needs to complete 69 million team actions to unlock the map. The results of this are interesting: the PC has almost double the team actions of the Xbox 360 and is currently only 5.5 million away from unlocking the map. Good job PC!
